David St John Thomas (1929-2014) was a British publisher, entrepreneur and author known primarily for founding the publishing house David & Charles and for writing extensively about railways, rural life, and travel.
As founder of David & Charles in 1960, he helped establish one of Britain's most significant transportation and heritage publishing houses, which became especially well-known for its books on railways, canals, and industrial history. The company grew to publish over 300 titles annually at its peak.
St John Thomas authored more than 30 books during his career, including "The Rural Transport Problem" and "A Regional History of the Railways of Great Britain." His writing focused particularly on British railway history and the changing nature of rural life in the 20th century.
Beyond publishing and writing, he was active in heritage preservation and served as chairman of the West Somerset Railway, Britain's longest heritage railway line. He was awarded an OBE in 1976 for his services to publishing and industrial archaeology.
