📖 Overview
Francis Frith (1822-1898) was a pioneering English photographer and businessman who documented the Middle East and many British cities through extensive photographic expeditions. His photographs of Egypt, Palestine, Syria, and the United Kingdom created one of the first major photographic records of these regions in the mid-19th century.
During his three expeditions to the East between 1856 and 1860, Frith captured images of ancient monuments, landscapes, and architectural sites using the wet-collodion process. These photographs became highly regarded for their technical excellence and historical significance, particularly his documentation of Egyptian antiquities and biblical sites.
In 1860, Frith founded Francis Frith & Co., which became the world's first specialist photographic publisher. The company undertook an unprecedented project to photograph every town and village in the United Kingdom, creating what would become the most comprehensive photographic survey of British life in the Victorian era.
His legacy endures through the vast archive of images he created, which serve as invaluable historical documents of both Middle Eastern archaeology and British social history. The Francis Frith Collection, comprising over 330,000 photographs taken between 1860 and 1970, remains one of the largest archives of historical photographs in the world.
