📖 Overview

Geshe Wangyal (1901-1983) was a prominent Tibetan Buddhist scholar and teacher who played a key role in bringing Tibetan Buddhism to the United States. As one of the first Tibetan Buddhist teachers in America, he established the Lamaist Buddhist Monastery of America in New Jersey in 1958. Originally from Kalmykia in Russia, Wangyal studied at major Tibetan monasteries including Drepung, where he earned the prestigious Geshe degree. After fleeing the Soviet Union, he served as a member of the Tibetan Foreign Office and as an interpreter for high-ranking officials before eventually immigrating to the United States. His most significant contribution was training some of the first Western scholars of Tibetan Buddhism, including Jeffrey Hopkins and Robert Thurman. Wangyal's book "The Door of Liberation" remains an important introductory text on Tibetan Buddhist thought and practice. During his later years in New Jersey, Wangyal focused on teaching Buddhist philosophy and Tibetan language while building bridges between Tibetan Buddhist traditions and Western academic scholarship. His monastery became an important center for preserving Tibetan Buddhist teachings in the West.
