📖 Overview

Sri Vidyaranya was a 14th-century Indian philosopher, scholar and statesman who served as the Jagadguru of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham from 1380-1386 CE. He authored numerous influential works on Vedanta philosophy and played a key role in establishing the Vijayanagara Empire in South India. His most significant philosophical works include the Panchadasi and Jivanmuktiviveka, which are considered masterpieces of Advaita Vedanta literature. The Panchadasi in particular is renowned for its systematic exposition of non-dual philosophy through fifteen chapters dealing with various aspects of consciousness and reality. As a statesman and advisor, Vidyaranya guided the founders of the Vijayanagara Empire - Harihara I and Bukka Raya I - helping transform the kingdom into one of medieval India's most powerful states. Prior to his monastic life, he served as a minister in the court and was known by his pre-monastic name Madhava. His scholarship extended beyond philosophy to subjects including the Vedas, dharmasastras, astronomy and music. Several works are attributed to him including the Sarvadarshana Sangraha (a compendium of Indian philosophical schools) and commentaries on the Vedas, though some attributions remain debated by scholars.
