📖 Overview
Kurt Aland (1915-1994) was a German theologian and biblical scholar who made significant contributions to New Testament textual criticism and the study of early Christianity. He served as a professor at the University of Münster and founded the Institute for New Testament Textual Research.
Aland is best known for his work on critical editions of the New Testament, particularly as co-editor of the Novum Testamentum Graece (Nestle-Aland text) and the Greek New Testament. His research and editorial work helped establish the standard Greek texts used by scholars and translators worldwide.
Together with his wife Barbara Aland, he developed methods for classifying New Testament manuscripts and created comprehensive lists of variant readings. The Alands also established what became known as "the local-genealogical method" of textual criticism.
His scholarly output included over 150 books and articles, focusing on church history, New Testament studies, and the development of early Christian texts. The Kurt Aland Center for Basic Research in Source Criticism continues his work in biblical textual studies at the University of Münster.
