Wayne Vucinich (1913-2005) was an American historian and academic who specialized in Eastern European, Balkan, and Russian history. His scholarly work and teaching at Stanford University helped establish Russian and Eastern European studies as an important field in American academia.
As one of the earliest scholars of Southeastern Europe in the United States, Vucinich produced influential works including "Serbia Between East and West: The Events of 1903-1908" and "The Ottoman Empire: Its Record and Legacy." He founded Stanford's Center for Russian and East European Studies and helped build one of the most comprehensive libraries of Slavic materials in North America. Born to Serbian immigrant parents in Butte, Montana, Vucinich's personal background informed his academic interests and expertise in Balkan studies.
