Whitney R. Harris

📖 Overview

Whitney R. Harris was an American lawyer and prosecutor at the Nuremberg Trials who played a key role in documenting and prosecuting Nazi war crimes after World War II. As a member of the U.S. prosecution team led by Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Jackson, Harris was responsible for the cases against Ernst Kaltenbrunner and several Nazi organizations including the Gestapo and SD. Harris authored "Tyranny on Trial: The Trial of the Major German War Criminals at the End of World War II at Nuremberg, Germany, 1945-1946," which became a definitive account of the Nuremberg proceedings. The book, first published in 1954, drew extensively from his firsthand experience and access to Nazi documents and testimony. After Nuremberg, Harris continued his legal career in private practice and served as a professor of law at Southern Methodist University. He established the Whitney R. Harris World Law Institute at Washington University in St. Louis to promote international justice and the rule of law. Harris remained active in international justice initiatives throughout his life and was the last surviving member of the U.S. prosecution team at Nuremberg when he died in 2010. His personal papers and trial documents are now preserved at several institutions, including Washington University and the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.
