As a leader in the Reform Jewish movement, Plaut served as the senior rabbi at Toronto's Holy Blossom Temple from 1961 to 1977. Born in Germany, Plaut fled Nazi persecution in 1935 and emigrated to the United States, where he was ordained as a rabbi. The recipient of numerous honorary degrees and awards, Plaut was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1978 and received the Order of Ontario in 1986.
