Zhong Rong

Zhong Rong was a Chinese literary critic and poet who lived during the Liang dynasty (502-557 CE). He is primarily known for compiling the "Shi Pin" (Poetry Grades), the earliest surviving work of systematic poetry criticism in Chinese literature. The "Shi Pin" evaluated and ranked 123 poets from the late Han dynasty through the Qi dynasty, grouping them into upper, middle and lower grades. His critical framework established important standards for judging poetry that influenced later Chinese literary criticism. Through his analytical work, Zhong Rong helped develop and refine concepts central to Chinese poetic theory, particularly regarding tone, style, and artistic qualities.
