📖 Overview
Robert K. Tanenbaum is an American trial attorney, legal expert, and bestselling author known for his crime fiction and non-fiction books. He has written over 30 novels, most notably the long-running Butch Karp-Marlene Ciampi series featuring a New York District Attorney and his crime-fighting wife.
Before his writing career, Tanenbaum served as Deputy Chief Counsel for the House Select Committee on Assassinations investigating President Kennedy's death, and as Bureau Chief of the New York County District Attorney's Office. His legal background heavily informs his writing, particularly in his portrayal of courtroom scenes and legal procedures.
His first novel, "No Lesser Plea" (1987), introduced the characters of Butch Karp and Marlene Ciampi, launching what would become his signature series. The books combine elements of legal thriller, police procedural, and family drama, set primarily in New York City.
Tanenbaum has also written non-fiction works, including "Badge of the Assassin," which details his prosecution of the Black Liberation Army members who murdered two NYPD officers. The book was later adapted into a television film starring James Woods.
