Tomé Pires

📖 Overview

Tomé Pires was a Portuguese apothecary and diplomat who wrote one of the earliest and most important European accounts of Asian trade and geography in the 16th century. His major work, the Suma Oriental (written 1512-1515), provides detailed descriptions of maritime Asia from the Red Sea to Japan, including extensive information about trading routes, commodities, and local customs. As the first Portuguese diplomat sent to China during the Ming Dynasty, Pires departed from Malacca in 1517 leading an embassy to establish formal relations. The mission ended in failure, with Pires being imprisoned by Chinese authorities in Guangzhou and later dying in captivity around 1524-1527. Before his diplomatic role, Pires served as the chief apothecary in Malacca, where he gathered extensive knowledge about Asian medicinal plants and spices. His background in pharmacy and trade, combined with keen observational skills, allowed him to create unusually accurate and detailed accounts of Asian commerce and society during the early age of Portuguese expansion. The Suma Oriental remained unpublished until 1944, when Armando Cortesão discovered and translated the manuscript. The work is now considered an invaluable primary source for understanding the maritime trade networks and political geography of early 16th century Asia.
