📖 Overview
Mirkhond (also spelled Mīrkhwānd or Mir Khvand) was a 15th-century Persian historian best known for his universal history Rawżat aṣ-ṣafāʾ (Garden of Purity). Born in 1433 in Balkh, he spent most of his life in Herat under the patronage of the Timurid dynasty.
His masterwork Rawżat aṣ-ṣafāʾ covers history from creation through the reign of Sultan Husayn Bayqara, comprising seven volumes that detail Islamic history, Persian dynasties, and the Mongol Empire. The comprehensive nature of this work and its accessible writing style made it highly influential in later Persian historiography.
Working primarily at the Khānqāh-i Khālişiyya complex in Herat, Mirkhond benefited from access to an extensive library and the support of Mir Ali-Shir Nava'i, a prominent Timurid statesman. His historical accounts, while sometimes including legendary material, remain valuable sources for understanding medieval Persian perspectives on world history.
The lasting influence of Mirkhond's work is evident in its widespread circulation throughout the Islamic world and its translation into multiple languages, including Turkish and English. His death in 1498 left the final volume of Rawżat aṣ-ṣafāʾ to be completed by his grandson Khwandamir, himself a notable historian.
