📖 Overview
Washington Gladden (1836-1918) was an American Congregational minister, social reformer, and leading figure in the Social Gospel movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His writings and activism focused on applying Christian principles to social issues like labor rights, urban poverty, and political corruption.
As one of the first religious leaders to support workers' rights to unionize, Gladden helped bridge the gap between organized labor and Protestant churches. His influential book "Applied Christianity" (1887) argued that Christian ethics should extend beyond personal salvation to address systemic social and economic problems.
During his 35-year ministry at First Congregational Church in Columbus, Ohio, Gladden wrote over 30 books on religion, social reform, and current affairs. His most enduring hymn "O Master, Let Me Walk with Thee" remains in use in many Protestant hymnals today.
Gladden served as a moderator of the National Council of Congregational Churches and was elected the first president of the American Institute of Social Service. His advocacy for progressive reforms and racial equality sometimes put him at odds with more conservative religious leaders, but his ideas helped shape modern Christian social ethics.
