Marshall Saunders was a Canadian author born Margaret Marshall Saunders in 1861. She became the first Canadian woman to sell over one million copies of a novel with her book "Beautiful Joe," published in 1893.
Saunders wrote animal stories that focused on themes of kindness and humane treatment. Her work emerged during the late 19th century when animal welfare movements were gaining momentum in North America. "Beautiful Joe" was based on a true story about an abused dog who finds a loving home.
The book won a contest sponsored by the American Humane Education Society and became an international success. Saunders continued writing animal stories and children's literature throughout her career, though none achieved the same level of popularity as her debut novel.
She died in 1947, having established herself as a pioneer in animal welfare literature. Her writing contributed to changing attitudes about animal treatment during a period when such concerns were becoming more prominent in society.
