📖 Overview
Derek Landy
Derek Landy is an Irish author and screenwriter best known for creating the Skulduggery Pleasant series of children's fantasy novels. His work has achieved significant commercial success, with HarperCollins paying £1.8 million for the publishing rights to his first novel.
Landy began his career as a screenwriter, penning the IFTA award-winning Dead Bodies and IFTA-nominated Boy Eats Girl. After becoming dissatisfied with the collaborative nature of filmmaking, he turned to novel writing, where he found his greatest success with Skulduggery Pleasant.
The Skulduggery Pleasant series has expanded to include multiple series entries, including a nine-book main series, a six-book sequel series, a spin-off, and a prequel. Since 2018, Landy has also ventured into comic book writing, producing several series for Marvel Comics.
While Warner Bros. initially acquired the film rights to Skulduggery Pleasant for US$1.1 million, Landy later bought back the rights due to creative differences. The series has since been through various stages of adaptation development with different production companies.
