Originally from rural Alabama, Redfield studied sociology at Auburn University and later earned a master's degree in counseling. He spent over 15 years working as a therapist for abused adolescents while developing his interest in human potential, Eastern philosophy, and psychic phenomena. In 1989, Redfield left his therapy practice to pursue writing full-time, combining his diverse interests in psychology, philosophy, science, and mysticism. His debut novel "The Celestine Prophecy" went on to sell over 20 million copies worldwide and remained on the New York Times Best Seller list for more than three years. Following the success of his first book, Redfield wrote several sequel novels including "The Tenth Insight: Holding the Vision" and "The Secret of Shambhala: In Search of the Eleventh Insight."
