📖 Overview
Else Holmelund Minarik (1920-2012) was a Danish-born American author who created over 40 children's books, most notably the beloved Little Bear series. After immigrating to the United States at age four, she maintained a connection to her Danish heritage through the storytelling traditions of Hans Christian Andersen.
Following her graduation from Queens College in 1942, Minarik worked as a journalist during World War II and later became a first-grade teacher on Long Island. Her experience teaching young readers inspired her to write Little Bear, which became the first book in her most successful series and was later adapted for television.
The Little Bear books, illustrated by Maurice Sendak, were groundbreaking early-reader titles that combined simple, gentle storytelling with emotional depth. Minarik continued writing throughout her life, publishing her final work, Little Bear and the Marco Polo, in 2010 at the age of 89.
Minarik's other significant works include No Fighting, No Biting! and Father Bear Comes Home. Her writing career spanned over five decades, during which she maintained her practice of writing all manuscripts by hand.
