📖 Overview
Marie Belloc Lowndes was a prominent English novelist who wrote prolifically from 1898 to 1946. Her work was particularly noted for blending suspenseful narratives with psychological depth, and she achieved significant success with several of her novels being adapted for film.
Most notably, her 1913 novel "The Lodger," inspired by the Jack the Ripper murders, became her most enduring work and was adapted multiple times for cinema, radio, and opera. Her other successful works included "The Chink in the Armour" (1912), "Letty Lynton" (1931), and "The Story of Ivy" (1927).
Born into a distinguished Anglo-French family in 1868, she was the sister of noted author Hilaire Belloc and daughter of French barrister Louis Belloc and English feminist Bessie Parkes. Following her marriage to Frederick Sawrey A. Lowndes in 1896, she maintained a consistent literary output, publishing works at an annual rate until near her death in 1947.
Her writing career began with a biography of the Prince of Wales in 1898, after which she produced a steady stream of novels, plays, and reminiscences. Beyond her crime thrillers, she also wrote historical novels and biographical works, including "The Young Hilaire Belloc," published posthumously in 1956.
