Stanley Schmidt is an American science fiction author and editor best known for his 34-year tenure as editor of Analog Science Fiction and Fact magazine from 1978 to 2012. He holds a PhD in physics from Case Western Reserve University and has combined his scientific background with his literary career throughout his professional life.
Before becoming Analog's editor, Schmidt worked as a professor at Heidelberg College, teaching physics, astronomy, biology, and science fiction. His own writing career began in 1968 with the short story "A Flash of Darkness," and he went on to publish several novels including The Sins of the Fathers and Argonaut.
Schmidt's contributions to science fiction have been widely recognized within the industry. He received Hugo Award nominations for Best Professional Editor every year from 1980 through 2006, and for Best Editor Short Form from 2007 through 2013, finally winning the award in 2013. He has also served on the Board of Advisers for the National Space Society and the Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame.
