📖 Overview
Robert Joseph Shea (1933-1994) was an American novelist and journalist who made his mark in both counterculture and historical fiction. He gained prominence as the co-author of the Illuminatus! trilogy with Robert Anton Wilson, a science fantasy series that became a cult phenomenon and was adapted for the stage at the British National Theatre.
After the success of Illuminatus!, Shea focused on writing meticulously researched historical novels. His works included Shike, set in medieval Japan; All Things Are Lights, centered on the Albigensian Crusade; and The Saracen, a two-volume work about conflicts between Muslims and Christians during the Crusades.
Shea's final published work was Shaman (1991), a novel exploring Native American themes. He left several other works either unfinished or unpublished at the time of his death, including Lady Yang and Children of Earthmaker, with some later being released under Creative Commons licensing.
Beyond his literary career, Shea was actively involved in countercultural movements, serving as editor of the anarchist publication No Governor and appearing as a featured speaker at consciousness-exploration festivals. His work consistently explored themes of political power, religious conflict, and alternative perspectives on history.
