Henry Suso

📖 Overview

Henry Suso (c. 1295-1366) was a German Dominican friar, mystic and spiritual writer who became one of the most influential religious authors of 14th century Germany. His works, written in both Latin and Middle High German, helped spread mystical theology and devotional practices throughout medieval Europe. Suso's most significant works include "The Little Book of Truth," "The Little Book of Eternal Wisdom," and his autobiography "Life of the Servant." These texts combine theological discourse with vivid descriptions of his mystical experiences and severe ascetic practices, which included wearing a hair shirt studded with nails and sleeping on a wooden cross. His writings emphasized the importance of suffering as a path to divine wisdom, though he later moderated his views on extreme physical mortification. The combination of intellectual depth and emotional intensity in his work earned him the title "Sweet Suso" among his contemporaries and influenced later Catholic spirituality. Beyond his written works, Suso was also known for his pastoral work and preaching, particularly to Dominican nuns. He was beatified by the Catholic Church in 1831, and his feast day is celebrated on March 2.
