Karin Alvtegen is a Swedish author best known for her psychological crime fiction novels set in Sweden. Born in 1965 in Huskvarna, she emerged as a significant voice in Nordic noir literature, with four of her works translated into English: Missing, Betrayal, Shadow, and Shame.
Her breakthrough came with Missing, which won the prestigious Glass Key award for Nordic crime fiction in 2001 and later received an Edgar Award nomination from the Mystery Writers of America. The novel was subsequently adapted into a television miniseries starring Joanne Froggatt and Gregor Fisher.
Prior to her literary career, Alvtegen worked in television, writing 24 episodes of the Swedish soap opera Rederiet. Her novel Shame further established her reputation when it was shortlisted for the Crime Writers' Association Duncan Lawrie International Dagger award.
In 2013, Alvtegen's career was significantly impacted when she developed myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), a condition that has prevented her from continuing her writing career.
