📖 Overview
Jennifer Donnelly is an American novelist who writes historical and young adult fiction. Since beginning her career in 2002, she has become particularly well-known for her young adult historical novel "A Northern Light," which won the prestigious Carnegie Medal in the UK and was named one of Time Magazine's 100 Best Young Adult Books of All Time.
Born in Port Chester, New York in 1963, Donnelly's writing is influenced by her family's Irish immigrant history and her time spent between Rye and Port Leyden, New York. Her great-grandparents' settlement in the Adirondacks and her grandmother's work at Big Moose Lake directly informed the setting of "A Northern Light."
After completing her English Literature degree at the University of Rochester and studying at Birkbeck College, University of London, Donnelly embarked on her writing career. Her debut publications came in 2002 with both a picture book, "Humble Pie," and her first novel, marking the beginning of a successful career in multiple genres of children's and young adult literature.
The Carnegie Medal recognition for "A Northern Light" (published as "A Gathering Light" in the UK) established Donnelly as a significant voice in young adult historical fiction. The novel's later selection as one of the top ten Carnegie Medal winners of all time further solidified its importance in children's literature.
