📖 Overview
John Henry Patterson (1867-1947) was a British soldier, hunter, and author best known for chronicling his experiences pursuing and killing two man-eating lions in Tsavo, Kenya. His book "The Man-Eaters of Tsavo" (1907) documented the events of 1898-1899 when he was tasked with building a railway bridge over the Tsavo River while contending with lions that had killed numerous workers.
Patterson served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the British Army and later commanded the 38th Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers during World War I, comprised primarily of Jewish volunteers. His military service and leadership of Jewish troops led him to become a strong supporter of Zionism and Jewish settlement in Palestine.
Beyond his famous lion encounters, Patterson wrote several other books including "In the Grip of the Nyika" (1909) and "With the Zionists in Gallipoli" (1916). His accounts of the Tsavo lions have been adapted multiple times for film, most notably in "The Ghost and the Darkness" (1996) starring Val Kilmer as Patterson.
The preserved remains of the Tsavo lions that Patterson shot are now housed at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, where they continue to be studied by scientists investigating the unusual behavior of these man-eating lions.
