Biruté Galdikas

📖 Overview

Biruté Mary Galdikas is a primatologist, anthropologist, and conservationist who has dedicated over four decades to studying and protecting orangutans in their natural habitat. She is recognized as one of the world's leading experts on orangutan behavior and ecology, having conducted the longest continuous study of any wild orangutan population. In 1971, Galdikas established Camp Leakey research station in Tanjung Puting National Park, Indonesian Borneo, where she began her groundbreaking field research. Her work documented orangutan social structure, behavior patterns, and the challenges these apes face from deforestation and illegal hunting. Along with Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey, Galdikas was one of three researchers known as "Leakey's Angels," chosen by anthropologist Louis Leakey to study great apes in their natural environments. She has authored several books, including "Reflections of Eden" and numerous scientific publications about orangutan behavior and conservation. Galdikas founded the Orangutan Foundation International in 1986, through which she continues her conservation efforts and advocacy work. Her contributions to primatology and conservation have earned her numerous awards, including the United Nations Global 500 Award and the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement.
