Miep Gies

📖 Overview

Miep Gies (1909-2010) was one of the Dutch citizens who helped hide Anne Frank and her family during World War II, and later preserved Anne's diary after the family was discovered and arrested by the Nazis. For two years, Gies and her fellow helpers brought food, supplies, and news to the Frank family and four other Jewish people hiding in the Secret Annex above Otto Frank's business premises in Amsterdam. After the hiding place was raided in 1944, Gies found and safeguarded Anne Frank's writings, unread, before returning them to Otto Frank after the war. In the decades following Anne Frank's death, Gies worked to keep Anne's memory alive through speaking engagements and her own memoir, "Anne Frank Remembered" (1987). She spent much of her later life answering letters from around the world and speaking about Anne Frank's legacy, while consistently rejecting the label of hero despite her courageous actions. Gies lived to be 100 years old and was honored with numerous awards for her humanitarian efforts, including the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and being knighted by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands.
