📖 Overview
Dhumketu (1892-1965) was one of Gujarat's most prolific writers and a pioneering figure in the Gujarati short story format. His real name was Gaurishankar Govardhanram Joshi, and he produced over 500 short stories, as well as novels, plays, and literary criticism throughout his career.
The writer earned recognition for his psychological insight and masterful portrayal of village life in early 20th century India. His short stories often focused on the emotional complexities of ordinary people and tackled themes of social reform, spirituality, and human relationships.
"Dhumketu" means "comet" in Sanskrit, a pen name that reflected his desire to bring new light to Gujarati literature. His most famous collection, "Tankha," published in 1926, marked a significant shift in Gujarati literature toward more modernist sensibilities and narrative techniques.
His work has been translated into multiple languages and continues to influence Indian literature. The annual Dhumketu Award, established in his honor, recognizes excellence in Gujarati short story writing.
