📖 Overview
Al-Saduq (923-991 CE), whose full name was Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Babawayh al-Qummi, was one of the most prominent Twelver Shia scholars and hadith collectors of the 10th century. He authored numerous influential works on Shia theology, jurisprudence, and hadith, with his most famous being "Man la yahduruhu al-Faqih," one of the four major Shia hadith collections.
Born in Qom to a family of scholars, Al-Saduq traveled extensively throughout the Islamic world to collect hadith and study under various teachers. His title "Al-Saduq" (meaning "the truthful one") was given to him due to his renowned reliability in narrating traditions.
The scope of his scholarly work was vast, having authored nearly 300 books, though many have been lost to time. His surviving works continue to be essential references in Shia Islamic scholarship, particularly in the fields of theology, law, and the principles of jurisprudence.
His methodology in collecting and verifying hadith set important standards for later scholars, and his works remain foundational texts in Shia seminary education. Al-Saduq spent his final years in Rey (near modern-day Tehran), where he taught and wrote until his death in 991 CE.
