📖 Overview
David Ramsay (1749-1815) was an American historian, physician and political leader from South Carolina who wrote several influential works on the American Revolution and early American history. He served as a delegate to the Continental Congress and was among the first major historians to document the Revolutionary period.
Ramsay's most significant works include "History of the Revolution of South Carolina" (1785), "History of the American Revolution" (1789), and "Life of George Washington" (1807). His historical writings were groundbreaking for their time, as he relied heavily on primary sources and eyewitness accounts rather than secondary materials.
As a participant in many of the events he chronicled, Ramsay brought firsthand knowledge to his historical accounts. He served as a field surgeon during the Revolutionary War and was later held prisoner by the British in Charleston for nearly a year, experiences which informed his historical perspective.
Beyond his historical works, Ramsay practiced medicine in Charleston and served in the South Carolina legislature. His life ended tragically when he was fatally shot by a mentally ill patient in 1815, but his historical works remained influential in shaping early American historiography.
