📖 Overview
Kapilar was one of the most significant poets of the Sangam period in ancient Tamil literature, active between the 1st century BCE and 2nd century CE. He is particularly renowned for his contributions to the Purananuru anthology and other classical Tamil works.
The poet belonged to the antanar (Brahmin) community and was known for his close association with the chieftain Pari, one of the Velir chiefs. After Pari's death in battle, Kapilar took responsibility for Pari's daughters and sought to arrange suitable marriages for them, an act that became a celebrated example of loyalty in Tamil literature.
Kapilar's works are notable for their detailed descriptions of the natural world and their exploration of both akam (interior/love) and puram (exterior/heroic) themes. His poetry in the Kuruntokai and Purananuru collections demonstrates masterful use of imagery and metaphor while adhering to the strict conventions of Sangam poetic tradition.
His most famous works include his elegies lamenting the death of Pari and verses praising the Mullai (forest) landscape. Scholars attribute approximately 235 verses to Kapilar across various Sangam anthologies.
