📖 Overview
Henry Louis Vivian Derozio (1809-1831) was an Indian poet and academic of Portuguese-Indian descent who taught at Hindu College, Calcutta. He is considered one of the first Indian poets to write in English and a pioneer of the Bengal Renaissance movement.
During his brief career as an assistant headmaster at Hindu College, Derozio influenced a generation of Bengali students through his teachings on rationalism, free thinking and European literature. His students, known as the Young Bengal group, went on to challenge orthodox Hindu traditions and promote social reform.
Derozio's most notable works include the poetry collections "Poems" (1827) and "The Fakeer of Jungheera: A Metrical Tale and Other Poems" (1828). His poetry often addressed themes of patriotism, nature and Indian culture, combining Romantic sensibilities with Indian subjects.
Though he died at just 22 years of age from cholera, Derozio's impact on Indian literature and thought remained significant. His poems like "To India - My Native Land" and "The Harp of India" are considered important early examples of Indian patriotic poetry in English.
