📖 Overview
Adrian Piper is an American conceptual artist, philosopher, and writer born in 1948. Her interdisciplinary work explores themes of racism, xenophobia, and social engagement through various mediums including performance art, writing, and visual installations.
As the first tenured African American woman professor in philosophy, Piper taught at Georgetown, Harvard, Michigan, Stanford and UC San Diego. Her philosophical work focuses on Kantian metaethics and the intersection of personal identity and social structures.
Piper's artistic practice gained prominence in the 1970s through provocative performances and installations that challenged viewers to confront their own prejudices and assumptions about race, gender and class. Her series "Mythic Being" (1973-1975), in which she adopted the persona of a male character, remains one of her most recognized works.
The artist has received numerous accolades including the Golden Lion for Best Artist at the 56th Venice Biennale (2015).
