📖 Overview
Tang Xianzu (1550-1616) was a Chinese playwright and poet during the Ming Dynasty who is considered one of the greatest dramatists in Chinese literary history. He is most renowned for his four major plays known as the "Four Dreams," with The Peony Pavilion being his most celebrated work.
As a government official turned playwright, Tang's works often challenged social conventions and explored themes of love transcending social barriers and reality itself. His masterpiece The Peony Pavilion, completed in 1598, consists of 55 scenes and remains one of the most performed Chinese operas.
Tang wrote in the Kunqu opera style and was known for his sophisticated literary language and complex plots that blended supernatural elements with human emotions. His other notable "Four Dreams" plays include The Purple Hairpin, The Dream of Handan, and The Dream of the Southern Bough.
Though he served as a county magistrate, Tang's main legacy rests in his contributions to Chinese dramatic literature and his influence on subsequent generations of playwrights. He died in the same year as William Shakespeare, leading some scholars to draw parallels between these two influential dramatists of the East and West.
