Being and Time

📖 Overview

Being and Time (1927) stands as Martin Heidegger's foundational philosophical text, presenting a radical investigation into the nature of human existence and the meaning of being. The work introduces key concepts like Dasein ("being-there") and explores the fundamental structures of human experience. The text challenges traditional Western metaphysics through its analysis of temporality, authenticity, and what Heidegger terms "being-in-the-world." Heidegger develops a new philosophical vocabulary to articulate his ideas, creating terms and concepts that have influenced fields from existentialism to literary theory. The book examines human existence through concepts like anxiety, care, death, and conscience. It positions these elements as essential aspects of human experience rather than mere psychological states. Through its examination of being and time, the work raises fundamental questions about human existence, authenticity, and the relationship between individuals and their world. The text represents a pivotal moment in philosophical thought, marking a shift from traditional metaphysics to a new way of understanding human existence.

🤔 Interesting facts

🔹 Heidegger wrote the first draft of "Being and Time" in just four weeks during 1926, while staying in a small cabin in the Black Forest of Germany. 🔹 The book was never actually completed - what we know as "Being and Time" is only about one-third of Heidegger's original planned work. 🔹 The term "Dasein" literally translates from German as "being-there," and before Heidegger's use, it was simply a common German word for "existence." 🔹 The publication of "Being and Time" in 1927 was rushed to secure Heidegger's promotion to full professor at the University of Marburg, replacing his former teacher Edmund Husserl. 🔹 Hannah Arendt, one of Heidegger's students and later a renowned philosopher herself, was among the first readers of the manuscript and helped with its early reception and interpretation.
