The Girl from Everywhere

by Heidi Heilig

📖 Overview

Sixteen-year-old Nix serves as a member of her father's time-traveling crew aboard the ship Temptation. The vessel can sail to any place and time, real or mythological, as long as they possess an authentic map from that period. Captain Slate, Nix's father, remains fixated on returning to 1868 Honolulu to save her mother, who died in childbirth. As they navigate toward this goal, Nix must confront the possibility that changing the past could erase her present existence. The story moves between modern-day New York, nineteenth-century Hawaii, and other times and places as Nix and the crew pursue their objectives. Elements of history, mythology, cartography and Hawaiian culture intersect throughout their journey. This genre-blending adventure explores themes of family loyalty, identity, and the tension between destiny and free will. Through Nix's experiences navigating both literal and metaphorical waters, the novel raises questions about the costs of changing the past and the nature of belonging.
