📖 Overview
A robotic probe arrives on Earth from the Grandjourney, a fleet of vessels that left the planet hundreds of years ago carrying humans in suspended animation. The probe seeks to assess if Earth has recovered enough from environmental collapse to allow the fleet's return.
Two AIs interface - one from the probe and one from Earth's own governing system. Through their interaction, they begin sharing records and memories spanning centuries of separate development on Earth and in space.
The narrative alternates between past and present as the two AI minds exchange information about their histories. Events from Earth's recovery period are revealed alongside the challenges faced by the humans who ventured into deep space.
The book examines questions about consciousness, the relationship between artificial and human intelligence, and humanity's capacity for both self-destruction and renewal. Through parallel storylines of Earth and space, it considers what traits truly define human civilization and its future.
