📖 Overview
Ming-Li is a young girl in China during Chairman Mao's 1958 campaign known as the Great Leap Forward. When the government announces its plan to eliminate sparrows because they eat grain seeds, Ming-Li questions whether killing all the birds is the right course of action.
Despite orders from authorities to participate in the national bird-killing campaign, Ming-Li decides to follow her conscience. She undertakes a secret project that puts her at odds with her village, her peers, and even members of her own family.
Ming-Li must navigate the conflict between loyalty to her country and standing up for what she believes is right. Her actions during this historical period demonstrate one child's courage to resist destructive groupthink.
This children's historical fiction explores themes of individual conscience versus collective action, environmental responsibility, and the power of quiet resistance. The story provides context for a lesser-known episode in Chinese history while examining universal moral questions.
