📖 Overview
A middle-aged actor named Toby Flood arrives in Brighton with his theater company to perform a newly discovered Joe Orton play. During the tour stop, his soon-to-be ex-wife Jenny reaches out with concerns about being stalked, pulling Flood into an investigation of her new partner, businessman Roger Colborn.
The alleged stalker turns out to be Derek Oswin, whose family worked for the Colborns' company for generations until its closure in 1989. Flood begins uncovering information about the defunct business and its practices while trying to protect Jenny from what he perceives as mounting danger.
As Flood pursues answers about the Colborn family's past, his professional obligations begin to suffer and his acting career takes a backseat to his personal investigation. The story moves between the worlds of theater and business as Flood navigates increasingly complex circumstances.
The novel explores themes of obsession, the weight of family history, and the extent to which people will go to uncover truth or protect those they care about. Questions of identity and performance extend beyond the theatrical setting into the characters' real lives.
