Legend

📖 Overview

Legend follows the story of a legendary warrior named Druss who comes out of retirement for one final battle. The Drenai Empire faces extinction as a massive army of unified Nadir tribes marches toward Dros Delnoch, the fortress that guards the empire's heartlands. The ancient fortress of Dros Delnoch must hold against overwhelming odds. With only 10,000 defenders against 500,000 attackers, the fortress's six mighty walls become the stage for an epic confrontation that will determine the fate of nations. The defenders, a mix of professional soldiers and civilian volunteers, prepare for what seems to be a hopeless siege. Under the guidance of Druss, whose reputation alone strikes fear into enemies, they ready themselves for the coming storm. At its core, Legend examines themes of courage, sacrifice, and the price of heroism. The novel presents warfare not as glorious adventure but as a brutal necessity where ordinary people must find extraordinary strength.

🤔 Interesting facts

🗡️ The book was written while Gemmell was battling cancer, which he initially believed was terminal. He used the siege of Dros Delnoch as a metaphor for his personal battle against the disease. 🏰 Each of the six walls of Dros Delnoch is named: The first is Wall Eldibar, followed by Musif, Kania, Sumitos, Valteri, and finally, The Wall Geddon. 📚 Legend was originally titled "Against the Horde" when first published in 1984, but was later renamed to its now-famous title for subsequent editions. ⚔️ The character Druss, one of the main protagonists, was inspired by Gemmell's stepfather, Bill Woodford, whom he described as "the toughest man over 50 I had ever met." 🌟 The novel was rejected by multiple publishers before being accepted, with one editor claiming it would never sell because "people aren't interested in siege stories." It went on to become a fantasy classic and launched Gemmell's career of 30+ novels.
