📖 Overview
The Future of Us takes place in 1996, when high school students Josh and Emma install AOL on Emma's new computer. Upon logging in, they discover their Facebook profiles from 15 years in the future - despite Facebook not existing in their present time.
The two former best friends, now navigating an awkward period in their relationship, notice that their future lives change each time they refresh their Facebook pages. Their discoveries about their potential futures force them to examine their current choices and relationships.
Emma and Josh must decide how to handle this window into their futures, while dealing with the complications of their present-day friendship, high school life, and relationships with others in their social circle.
The novel explores themes of destiny, free will, and how small present-day choices can alter the course of one's life. It also serves as a commentary on social media's role in shaping identity and relationships.
👀 Reviews
Readers found the premise intriguing but felt the execution fell short. Many noted the 90s nostalgia and AOL references resonated, particularly for those who lived through that era.

- Quick, easy read with an interesting "what-if" concept
- Relatable characters for young adult readers
Disliked:
- Plot becomes repetitive halfway through
- Character development feels shallow
- Facebook elements feel forced and dated
- Romance aspects overshadow the time-travel premise
Ratings:
Goodreads: 3.6/5 (82,000+ ratings)
Amazon: 3.9/5 (350+ ratings)
Barnes & Noble: 3.8/5 (200+ ratings)
Common reader comments mention "predictable storyline" and "wasted potential." One reviewer noted: "The book spends too much time on relationship drama and not enough exploring the consequences of seeing your future." Several readers pointed out that the story works better as a snapshot of 90s culture than as a sci-fi novel.
