📖 Overview
The Emperor's Soul follows Shai, a skilled magical forger facing execution in the Rose Empire. When the Emperor falls into a vegetative state after an assassination attempt, his advisors strike a deal with Shai - her freedom in exchange for creating a new soul for their ruler within 100 days.
Working alongside Gaotona, the Emperor's most principled advisor, Shai must reconstruct the Emperor's essence using only his personal writings and official records. The magic system of forgery allows practitioners to rewrite the history of objects and, in rare cases, people - though this practice is viewed as heretical by most.
The story takes place in the same world as Sanderson's novel Elantris, on a continent inspired by East Asian cultures and customs. The narrative unfolds within the confines of Shai's prison chambers as she races against time to complete her impossible task.
Through its exploration of authenticity, identity, and the nature of the soul, the novella raises questions about what makes a person genuine and whether art can capture truth better than reality. The relationship between artist and art stands at the core of this tightly-crafted fantasy tale.
