📖 Overview
In 1938 Fascist Italy, Nicholas Marlow takes a job as an Italian sales representative for a British engineering company that manufactures shell-production machinery. His initial plan is to work temporarily to overcome financial difficulties before returning to England to marry his fiancée.
Upon arriving in Milan, Marlow encounters a web of bureaucratic obstacles and suspicious circumstances, including intercepted mail and a mysteriously deceased predecessor. He becomes entangled with various intelligence operatives, including Andreas Zaleshoff, a Russian agent who occupies an office in the same building.
The situation escalates when General Vagas, a German intelligence agent posing as a Yugoslav military officer, attempts to recruit Marlow for espionage work. Marlow must navigate competing loyalties and threats while trying to maintain his safety in an increasingly dangerous political environment.
This pre-WWII thriller explores themes of moral compromise and individual survival within the machinery of totalitarian states. The novel examines how ordinary citizens become unwitting pawns in international power struggles.
