Cryptid Hunters

📖 Overview

Thirteen-year-old twins Grace and Marty O'Hara are sent to live with their Uncle Wolfe after their parents disappear in an accident. Their uncle lives on a remote island where he works as an anthropologist searching for cryptids - animals that may or may not exist. The twins become entangled in a high-stakes conflict between their uncle and Noah Blackwood, a prominent animal collector who wants to obtain a rare dinosaur egg. Their adventure takes them deep into the Congo jungle where they face dangers from both nature and those pursuing them. The novel combines elements of science fiction, adventure, and family drama as Grace and Marty uncover secrets about their family history. It is the first book in a series that continues with Tentacles, Chupacabra, and Mutation. The story explores themes of survival, trust, and the complex relationship between science and ethics. Through its mix of action and scientific elements, it raises questions about humanity's responsibility toward endangered species and unknown creatures.

🤔 Interesting facts

🦕 Cryptozoology, the study of hidden or unknown animals, gained significant public interest in the 1950s, parallel to major scientific discoveries of previously thought-extinct species like the coelacanth. 🌿 Author Roland Smith worked as a zookeeper for over 20 years before becoming a full-time writer, bringing authentic animal knowledge to his adventure stories. 🗺️ The book's setting was inspired by real-life locations like Komodo Island and other remote Indonesian archipelagos, where new species are still being discovered today. 🔍 Many of the technological devices used in the book for tracking cryptids are based on actual scientific equipment used by modern-day wildlife researchers. 🎯 The novel's success led to a sequel titled "Tentacles," which continues the cryptozoological adventures of the main characters as they search for a giant squid.
