Fraszki

📖 Overview

Fraszki is a collection of 294 short poems published in 1584 by Polish Renaissance poet Jan Kochanowski. The poems were written during Kochanowski's time as a court poet in the 1560s and 1570s, compiled into three distinct books. The collection achieved widespread popularity in Poland and sparked numerous reprints and imitations throughout the centuries. Various translations emerged over time, beginning with a Czech version in 1598, followed by German translations in the 17th century and a complete Italian translation in 1995. Some editions underwent moral censorship, with certain controversial poems being removed from subsequent printings. The collection's reach expanded in the 20th century with translations into French, though these covered only a small selection of the poems. The poems in Fraszki explore themes of daily life, love, politics, and social commentary through a mix of humor and keen observation. Through these short verses, Kochanowski created a lasting record of Renaissance Polish culture and society.
