What Feasts at Night

📖 Overview

Alex Easton, a retired soldier who uses neopronouns ka/kan, returns to kan hunting lodge in Gallacia following the death of the caretaker Codrin. The local villagers speak of a moroi - a supernatural being that suffocates its victims - while Codrin's daughter insists her father died of natural causes. Together with kan batman Angus and mycologist Eugenia Potter, Easton investigates strange occurrences at the lodge after hiring new caretakers. When a young man falls ill with mysterious breathing problems, Easton discovers the moroi may be connected to the lodge's dried-up spring house. What begins as a simple investigation transforms into a battle for survival as Easton confronts the moroi both in reality and in the dream world. The story weaves through kan memories of war while ka fights to save both kanself and others from the supernatural threat. The novel explores themes of duty, trauma, and the thin boundary between the natural and supernatural worlds. Its Gothic atmosphere serves as a backdrop for examining how past experiences shape our confrontations with present dangers.
