📖 Overview
The son of a mountain guide who died attempting to climb the Citadel, 16-year-old Rudi Matt dreams of conquering the unconquered peak that towers over his Swiss village. His mother forbids him from climbing and insists he focus on his work as a hotel dishwasher, but Rudi's mountaineering ambitions persist.
An English climbing party arrives in the village, presenting Rudi with an opportunity to prove himself on the mountain that claimed his father's life. The boy must navigate complex relationships with the English climbers, his protective mother, and his father's former climbing partner as he pursues his goal.
Rudi's journey tests his physical limits and forces him to make difficult choices between duty and passion, safety and risk. The harsh realities of Alpine climbing in the 1860s provide both the backdrop and the driving force of the narrative.
This coming-of-age story explores themes of legacy, determination, and the price of pursuing one's dreams. The novel examines how young people reconcile family expectations with personal aspirations, set against the unforgiving landscape of the Swiss Alps.
