Defy the Night

📖 Overview

The kingdom of Kandala faces a deadly fever that can only be cured by Moonflower petals, a rare medicinal resource. While the wealthy live safely in the central sectors with access to medicine, the poor suffer and die in the outer sectors where treatment is scarce. Tessa Cade works in secret as an apothecary, stealing Moonflower petals to help treat the sick in the outer sectors. Meanwhile, Prince Corrick serves as the King's Justice alongside his brother King Harristan, executing a harsh system of law and punishment to maintain order in the troubled kingdom. The two characters' paths intersect as they each try to protect what matters most to them in their own ways. Their opposing perspectives on justice, survival, and what it means to save lives drive the central conflict. This fantasy romance explores themes of inequality, moral compromise, and how people with good intentions can find themselves on opposite sides of a crisis. The story raises questions about power, privilege, and what individuals will sacrifice for what they believe is right.

🤔 Interesting facts

🌟 Author Brigid Kemmerer was inspired to write this story during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, when she witnessed both the best and worst of humanity during times of crisis. 🌿 The healing properties of the Moonflower plant in the story were loosely inspired by real medicinal plants like Artemisia annua, which has been used to treat malaria. 👑 While writing the story, Kemmerer drew parallels between historical plagues and social inequalities, particularly how diseases often affected poor communities more severely than wealthy ones. 🗡️ The main character Tessa's apothecary skills were researched through historical documents about medieval medicine and herbalism. 🌙 The book was written as a standalone novel but became so popular that Kemmerer expanded it into a series, with the sequel "Defend the Dawn" released in 2022.
