📖 Overview
When the Reckoning Comes follows Mira, who returns to her hometown of Kipsen, North Carolina for a wedding at Woodsman Plantation. Her childhood friend Celine is marrying a white man whose family converted the former plantation into an event venue and historical tourist attraction.
The wedding forces Mira to confront her complicated past, including her estranged friendship with Celine and their former friend Jesse, who met a tragic end at the plantation years ago. As celebrations begin at Woodsman, strange occurrences suggest the plantation's violent history refuses to stay buried.
Past and present collide as the spirits of enslaved people who died at Woodsman make their presence known during the wedding festivities. Mira finds herself caught between two worlds as she navigates both the immediate dangers and the weight of historical trauma.
The novel examines how places hold onto their histories and explores themes of racial justice, generational pain, and the ways in which America's past haunts its present. Through supernatural elements, it questions who has the right to reshape narratives around sites of historical atrocity.
