🤔 Interesting facts
🎵 The book is based on the beloved 1963 song of the same name, written by Leonard Lipton and Peter Yarrow of folk group Peter, Paul and Mary.
🐲 Despite popular misconceptions, the song and book were never meant to be about drugs. Peter Yarrow has repeatedly stated it's simply about the loss of childhood innocence.
✍️ Leonard Lipton wrote the original poem that inspired the song when he was just 19 years old, borrowing a typewriter from his friend Peter Yarrow's housemate at Cornell University.
🎨 The book's vibrant illustrations, created by Eric Puybaret, marked his first American children's book. His dreamlike, ethereal style perfectly captures the story's whimsical nature.
🎁 The 2007 published book includes a special gift: a CD featuring Peter Yarrow performing the original song, plus a new version recorded with his daughter Bethany and cellist Rufus Cappadocia.
