📖 Overview
Ten-year-old Lucky Trimble lives in Hard Pan, California - a desert town with only 43 residents. After her mother's death, she is cared for by Brigitte, her father's French ex-wife, while spending time with her two friends Lincoln and Miles.
Lucky spends her days eavesdropping on 12-step recovery meetings and taking care of her dog HMS Beagle. When she finds Brigitte's passport and suitcase, she becomes convinced her guardian plans to abandon her and return to France.
The story follows Lucky's search for answers and stability in Hard Pan as she grapples with loss and fear of abandonment. During a desert sandstorm, she makes choices that impact both herself and her small community.
This Newbery Medal-winning novel explores themes of family bonds, belonging, and the ways children process grief and uncertainty. The desert setting serves as both backdrop and metaphor for Lucky's emotional journey.
